Transforming Rural Madurai

Despite the significant potential of Madurai's rural areas, communities face ongoing socioeconomic hurdles. The local economy mainly depends on agriculture and related sectors. Farming in the Vaigai River basin relies on seasonal monsoon rains, but irregular rainfall and neglect of traditional irrigation tanks have caused severe water shortages, disrupting farming and income stability. Poor transportation infrastructure in interior villages hampers overall development. There is a notable gap between urban schools and rural government schools; the latter often lack modern facilities, and this, coupled with income instability, results in higher dropout rates among adolescents, especially young women. Limited access to primary healthcare remains a critical issue in rural regions. To address these challenges, Vision Trust, alongside local government agencies, has become a key partner in community-led rural transformation. Their strategies target water management, sustainable farming, improved education, skill development, women's empowerment, healthcare, sanitation, financial inclusion, and local livelihood initiatives to drive lasting systemic change.
